If Yer Going to Walk Around Naked, Do It With Confidence!
"Zit's" comic strip from Dec 1st through Dec 6th has Jeremy, the 15-year old star of the strip bravely chancing to go naked around the house when no one is home. Naturally, people immediately start showing up at the front door. In the final panel (Wednesday) a friend walks in unannounced and surprises the naked Jeremy. Jeremy screams and grabs a lamp shade for cover, only to have his unfazed friend remark, "Dude, if you're going to walk around naked, do it with confidence."
Good advice for the trail when we encounter other hikers. Show confidence. We have nothing to be ashamed of.
Isn't it kind of selfish not to be concerned about running into people who might not share your view regarding nudism.
ReplyDeleteSure you can say that they should "just get over it" or well their problem with nudity is their problem with nudity, but is it really right for you to decide if nudity is going to be forced upon them or not?
I believe if someone goes to an isolated hotspring they should expect the possibility of nudity and tolerate it. If they read up on the hotspring beforehand on the internet or in a book, it was most likely mentioned that the tradition there was that there were people who used it in the nude.
And for the more isolated lakes in the area, well if there is a lake really remote I don't think they should be suprised that someone might use the opportunity of the isolation to go skinny-dipping. Since there was the attempt at least not to be seen, they shouldn't make any big deal about it.
But as to more populated places, and I see no reason for them to think that if they go hiking that day they might run into you or another nude hiker. Nor do I see an attutude of saying well if they don't want to see nude body they should just not go hiking since well it is their land too (when we are talking about public land).
I like the idea of private land for nude hiking but of course that has to be with the permission of the landowner, perhaps someone who bought it for that purpose. And I guess if the chances of seeing another hiker is minimal then it would be like the skinny-dipping. An effort was made not to be seen so the hiker should realize that it is just part of hiking in more isolated places. But other than that I feel that nude hiking forces people to be in a situation they had no reason to expect to be in and one that can make them very uncomfortable indeed. And while you have no problem with nudity, there are many (if not most) who do and so forcing nudity on them unexpected like that would be forcing your views upon people with a far different perspective.
Perhaps specific trails could be set aside for nude hiking but that would depend on if there is enough of a constituency to warrant such a public action. And as we see with nude beaches when they are made legal (and of course when tey are just by tradition), such places do attract perverts.
ReplyDeleteIf there was a place that is nude by tradition (or legal) then the person would have known or should have known if they had read up about the area and knew the customs of the area they were going to that there would be a great likelihood of nudity there and if that is a problem to them they can avoid it.
ReplyDeleteBut with running into you and people like you there is no way to avoid it except to not go hiking at all.
