My Googlized C/O Map has had a lot of updates

Using the GoogleMaps API, I had at first intended to only note the places in Washington Oregon and maybe some of California that a nudist or naturist would be interested in. But the effort has kind of snowballed and now, instead of calling it Clothing-option Venues in the PACIFIC NORTHWEST, it became 'THE WEST' and then quickly changed to "THE WESTERN US & CANADA".

Lots of people are come forth with places and ideas . . . some I never suspected (like nude bungee cord jumping in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island). Some of you who know me personally know of my love for hot springs . . . and not merely because of the clothing-optional nature of most natural hot springs. They just fasinate me and I spend a couple of week every year pulling on mileage in the High Sierras of California and Nevada in search for hot springs. This has led me to really populate the list with accurate coordinates and directions to a lot of hot springs . . . some of which I have not been to but have always been on my list. And then there are the hot springs I didn't even know existed . . . yet there they are.

Lots on info on nude beaches, especially in California where I used to live.

And, I'm attempting to locate and enter every nudist club that I can find . . . just think of planning a trip and having a nudist stopover on every leg. I can see lots of opportunities.

Made a online friend up in Canada . . . Guythalizard . . . that is compiling a GPS list of Canadian Hot Springs. Together, we will come up with a great resource for nudist and naturists.

The full version of my interactive map can be seen by clicking on the title link above. Enjoy.

Upcoming Portland, Oregon Events

We have two superlative and legal clothing-optional beaches down in Portland, Oregon and both AANR and ORCOBA have events planned to make these beaches even better and gain increased acceptance from the surrounding communities . . . which is already good because of the efforts of naturists.

We also are going to be graced by a nude private showing of a travelling nude art exhibit and people will be given to chance to pose nude or try their hand at drawing the nude form.

April 8, 2006: UnClad 2006 art exhibit - Private viewing for nudists and also looking for anyone who is interested in modeling or artists who want to sketch, paint, sculpt, etc the models. You don't have to be an artist or model to enjoy an evening viewing nude art in the nude. The invitation has been extended to TNS groups in Oregon and Washington, AANR clubs in Oregon and Washington, the Slugs, and members of the NWnaturist newsgroup, as well as other Oregon newsgroups, such as ORCOBA and NWFunInTheSun. Website - Email for info

April 22, 2006: ORCOBA teams up with ODFW for Earth Day 2006 on Sauvies Island ORCOBA members have been cleaning up the clothing-optional beach on Sauvies Island . . . along with the adjacent textile beach and associated parking areas . . . for years, often staging impromtu parties to do a thorough litter patrol that endears ORCOBA to the Oregon Wildlife people that control this beautiful beach. This year, we make it official in cooperation with SOLV, to adopt Collins Beach on behalf of the naturists who so dearly love this place.

May 20, 2006: ORCOBA hosts SOLVs "Down by the Riverside" event at Collins Beach While AANR tackles the annual flood damage at Rooster Rock, ORCOBA will do likewise at Collins . . . insure the beach is cleared of debris and the famously deep, soothing sand is free of litter for the height of the summer season.

May 20, 2006: AANR-NW/SOLV "Down by the Riverside" Rooster Rock Beach clean up Last year, the Rangers at Rooster Rock hornswoggled us . . . we ended up almost completely rebilding an entire trail that got submerged and eroded away during the high-water spring runoff of the Columbia River. It is estimated in some quarters that several tons of sand got moved to create that new trail . . . which arriving visitors applauded as we opened it up for easy access to the beach. I have no doubt that the rangers have something just as sneaky in mind for us this year. But hey . . . it was sunny and it was fun pusing all those wheelbarrows stark-ass naked.

June 21, 2006: AANR-NW/SOLV Sauvie Island Beach clean up

August 5,6, 2006: AANR-NW GAT Rooster Rock Beach/Restful Haven/Sauvie
Island weekend
You simply cannot miss this get-together. Last year, Restful Haven . . . a great Nudist Resort just east of Portland, opened their doors to anyone who participated in the clean-up efforts at Rooster Rock. If you are a non-affiliated nudist, this is a great opportunity to visit a full-featured nudist resort and enjoy their amenities . . . set up a tent and stay the night, and then join us for a quick clean-up on Sauvies Island before enjoying the rest of the day on the beach with a cookout.

Upcoming Seattle Area Events

March 4 or 5? 2006: Seattle Clothed Rally at City Hall. Seattle citizens have traveled the world, and all over the Pacific Northwest to enjoy regional clothing-optional beaches. Seattle citizens declare that it is time to evolve – its time Seattle had its own European-style beaches! But let's discuss it. I'm open to your ideas. I'm assuming the message will be pretty broad. Contact Daniel at his email to see what you can do.

March 12, 2006: The SLUGS will co-host with NAC a cleanup of Discovery Beach to urge and promote it's designation as Seattle's first clothing-optional beach.

June 10, 2006: 3rd Annual World Naked Bike Ride-Seattle.

June 17th & 18th, 2006: Fremont Summer Solstice Fair; Nude bicycling, booths and in general, tolerance.

The Summer Solstice Parade & Pageant is actually a production of The Fremont Arts Council which gets melded together into a fun weekend.

The painted naked cyclists of the Summer Solstice Parade (currently independent of the FAC). ~160 riders last year. That event is always on a Saturday.

June 25th, 2006, Sunday: "2nd Annual Body Pride Ride (BPR)" Capital Hill and Downtown Seattle during Seattle Gay Pride Parade 2006. This is the third of three consecutive weekend painted naked bike rides in Seattle.

Clotheless in Canada

By Timothy Lamb

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

As soon as I sat down on the bus I could feel the sweat starting to form on the hair-ridden sections of my body.

I was travelling west from downtown Vancouver bound for the University of British Columbia. But, there was something taboo that lay beyond the border of the college. The ethnic woman with the young child, the two giggly teenage girls and the man with the oversized headphones, they all knew where I was heading; I could feel the stares from across the bus. At least that is what I thought.

I was told if in Vancouver I had to visit Wreck Beach. It's said to be one of the biggest nudey beaches, or if you prefer the PC term; naturalist colony, in North America. So I was taking up this suggestion.

But it seems leaving your comfort zone can accelerate a number of emotions, for example paranoia. Is it wrong to go to a place where everyone is naked? What is the etiquette? Are there any limits on behaviour or is it just one big x-rated movie?

However, there is always the fantasy that goes hand-in-hand with travelling to an unknown realm that you will thoroughly enjoy leaving 'normal life' and fitting in somewhere unexpected.

On my way to the bus stop I even had a premonition that after pitching a few witty comments to the locals I would become one with them. By the end of the night we would be sitting naked around the beach fire singing Kumbaya watching the sun set over Vancouver Island. Then the next time I would visit, they would assign me with an Inuit nickname, which translated as "Naked Kiwi".

That happening however, would involve me conquering my fear by baring both sets of cheeks (upper and lower) at the same time something I am only 50 per cent comfortable with (and you can guess which half).

In an (completely innocent) internet search, I found a Wreck Beach website. It seemed I wasn't the only one who did not know the etiquette at a nudey beach, because there was an entire section devoted to protocol.

Rule number six...GAWKING, STARING, OR MAKING RUDE COMMENTS IS NOT APPRECIATED!

They knew I was coming.

My sole reason is to "gawk" I want to see how the other side live. I don't know whether to feel like a rebel or a shady character; someone likely to appear in court in the pursuing days of my expedition on charges of 'gawkery'.

I arrive at the university campus leaving my paranoia on the bus and prepare to make the most of the sun-drenched day.

There were tens of others also making this religious-like pilgrimage, negotiating down the hundreds on man-made steps towards the sand and waves.

The beach is 7.8km long, and is Canada's largest legal clothing-optional site.

From the bottom of the stairs, it fans to the left and right for several kilometres each way. However, a majority of sun-bathers are situated within 200m of the entrance, where tree bark litters the dirty brown, and on this day tremendously hot, sand. More than 30 smooth, partially-worn out tree trunks are strewn on these sanded areas, serving as shelter and seating.
To the right is a stoney area, partially sheltered, which I can only initially see for about 400 metres before it takes a dogleg to the right. To the left is a swampy area, which is populated by high flax-like shrubs and apparently a lot of gays.

I peel my shoes from my feet and set off strolling in the direction of the masses, immediately feeling the stares like darts to a dartboard. Paranoia has found me again. Me with my pasty effort at a tan (and what is worse, I was fully clothed - an amateur mistake), we don't belong here. These people have the fear-sense of a pack of dogs, they have the nous to know there is fresh meat on the beach, or so I think.

When I build up enough confidence to graze the people on the beach I am surprised at the range of ages and bodies. There were the natural bodies and the not-so natural, which have been well crafted under the watchful eye of a) a gym trainer; b) a plastic surgeon; or c) both of the above. There are the well-tanned and the wannabe be well-tanned.

College girls and guys in groups of three, lower the mean age of the population, which I had expected to be much older. A number of young families make castles in the wet sand, while a dozen teenage skim-boarders occupy a good 50m of the beach in the shallow waters.

The place feels more like a clothes-less hippy commune rather something sinister like I had assumed before arriving.

Acoustic guitars appeared common for groups of more than four people and about five hammocks seemed to be occupied by middle-aged people, whose dark, raisin-like skin indicates they may not have left the beach since the 1980s.

I make my way to the water's edge where two fully de-robed men, who appeared to be of a retired age and carried well-catered midriffs, were preparing to hit the cloudy-brown water.

My confidence was growing and I was, sort of, ready to chat. How do you strike up a conversation with two men when they're starkers? I go with the obvious.

"It's quite big isn't it?"

I always remember one of my biggest problems as a teenager was not thinking things through in my head before I said them aloud. It is something I thought I would eventually grow out of. Nope. This Lamb is still plagued by foot-in-mouth disease. So I scramble to justify the words I have spoken to these naked men. "The beach I mean," I add with a nervous haste.

I felt flush and it had nothing to do with the warm sun.

The men looked at me momentarily, one looked as though he was about to conversate, but instead they carried on their voyage into the roughly breaking waves.

I kept walking along the beach to where I found a women standing behind a table, situated at one of the entry/exit points to the beach. The only fashion decoration off-setting her au natural look is a pair of ear-rings made out of door keys. On the table were plans outlining proposed building developments on university land at the top of the cliff overlooking the beach. Ms. keys-for-ear-rings was using her heafty set of lungs (which accessorised her rugged figure) to ensure everyone at the beach that day would know the "locals" were opposing the developments.

This is bound to be my ticket into the friendship circle of the locals I thought, so I aim to grab her attention.

"It'd be a great view from the top floor of that building, though eh?"

Something immediately told me I shouldn't have said that.

Ms keys-for-ear-rings turned to me for two seconds and gave a look, which I read as: "You better leave before I do something to you that's illegal and unpleasant."

I took that as my cue to leave and headed to Stormin' Norman's Spirit Grill, one of two eateries on the beach. The premises is sheltered solely by a parachute canopy, which was tied to several wooden poles.

About 10 semi and fully-nude people are cuing for one of the ten items on the menu, which is crudely hand-drawn, likely by someone under the age of five, on a piece of cardboard. They are offering a range of wild food items including buffalo, but bottled water seems to be the safest option.

I offer an ice-breaker to my server in an attempt to make conversation. "Great job you've got," I say with a sarcastic chuckle and looking around at the patrons.

No smile. Not even a nod of acknowledgement, or raised eyebrow. She must get that one all the time. She hands me my water, looks past me and shrieks, "next."

I had learned the hard way one of the unwritten rules of Wreck Beach. Rule 13... SARCASM MUST BE KEPT ON A LEASH AT ALL TIMES. ANY COMMENTS BORDERING ON SMART OR SARCASTIC WILL BE IMPOUNDED.

With my conversational skills yet to make an impression on the locals I retreated to the solace of towel on sand. I discarded my shirt, lay on my back and fixed my eyes firmly on the travel guide I had brought with me.

I came to Wreck Beach with the hope of meeting some locals and finding out more about these sometimes taboo recreational jaunts.

I had spent half of my time here trying to fit in, make conversation and not feel so out of place.
Then it hit me after two hours of sun later and a feeling of near dehydration. I need to take the plunge what do I have to lose except for my nudist colony virginity? I had almost forgotten the real reasons for coming to the beach - to gawk and to cure my own insecurities.

No one at the beach knows me and the chance of meeting any of these people again is minuscule.

Off came the shorts.

I packed up my belongings, stood up and harnessed my backpack on my shoulders.

I walked down the beach towards the same steps that had brought me here in the morning. Except this time, I am naked.

And unlike earlier, this time there were no glares or stares. Possibly due to the lack of gym work I had put in recently, but, more likely because I am doing what they do.

I temporarily conquered my Everest and had done as those Romans.

Wreck Beach Update: Towers to be scaled back

47,000 petition signatures later, a massive email and letter writing campaign and your voices have been heard. In what started out as an ambitious project to build four 20-story student resident towers near the edge of the bluffs overlooking Wreck Beach with little public input has been trimmed back to three towers with the top floors lopped off. Well done naturists and nudists of the world. Your voice does count because the university regents are feeling your pressure!

However, read this self-serving article, put out unilaterally by the University of British Columbia, and think to yourself . . . 'yes, we have won a partially victory', then read the Naturist Action Committee Update following the article to see why we must continue with the fight against the UBC and why this isn't the victory we stand fast for, but simply a stage along the way. The University of British Columbia is attempting to put a positive spin on the 'accommodations' they have made in order to make themselves seem like the aggrieved party.

UBC scales back plans for new residences again

By ROD MICKLEBURGH

Saturday, January 28, 2006

Vancouver -- The buff battle of the bluffs is over, according to the University of British Columbia. To end a raging controversy over plans to build several high-rise student residences overlooking the nudist paradise of Wreck Beach, UBC announced yesterday a further scaling back of the project.

What was once set to be four, 20-storey towers will now be two 18-storey buildings and one 17-storey high-rise, university officials said.

Wreck Beach enthusiasts had waged a long campaign against the project, charging the tops of the towers would spoil the view from the beach below and allow residences to peep down at nude sunbathers.

"The decision clearly balances the needs of our students with the concerns raised by the community throughout the consultation process," UBC president Martha Piper

The Naturist Action Commitee's Update posted the day after the unilateral, one-sided newspaper article:

SUBJECT: Wreck Beach

TO : All Naturists and other concerned citizens

Dear Naturist,

An article published yesterday in The Globe & Mail gave the impression that the University of British Columbia (UBC) had relented on the issue of residential towers that are planned to loom over Wreck Beach. The article portrays the long-standing controversy as having been resolved.

The newspaper article is quite misleading. Unfortunately, the matter is not resolved.

Beginning with an opening phrase that reads, "The buff battle of the bluffs is over, according to the University of British Columbia," the newspaper article merely repeats UBC's spin concerning the towers and the Official Community Plan (OCP) that is supposed to govern development.

STATEMENT FROM THE WRECK BEACH PRESERVATION SOCIETY

The Wreck Beach Preservation Society (WBPS) has released the following statement:

"The buff battle of the bluffs is NOT over! With characteristic disregard for the governance role of the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD), UBC's Board of Governors defied the recent GVRD Staff request to lower the remaining two towers to 16 storeys.

"This so-called balanced 'scaling back of the project' does NOT address the needs of over 6000 students who signed the anti-Phase 2 petitions out of 47,000 signatories. The simple fact is that only the GVRD can determine if the towers are in compliance with the OCP.

"UBC has no business whatsoever pronouncing its development to be consistent with the OCP by usurping GVRD jurisdiction over planning in Electoral District A, in which Wreck Beach lies. If the UBC towers are not further lowered, they will violate several GVRD visibility resolutions.

"It is time that GVRD parkland stewards call UBC's bluff or the obscenities will continue."

Suntan Oil Ruins the Sex-life of Fish

We dump way too much stuff into our water supplies. Ever jump into a popular swimming pool and notice the sheen of suntan oil on the surface. I don't know how much veracity to attribute to this article. Perhaps we are over-doing it. The last paragraph eludes to concerns by some researchers that because of our over-dependence on sun protection products that we are not getting enough vitamin D . . . the very item we need to prevent many of these skins cancers we are worried about. There was a lengthly article published awhile back (it's in my blog, as well) that discussed this very subject and actually called for nude sunbathing by people as a way to get the necessary stocks of vitamin D. Seems we all need to be a little bit more prudient in our use of sun tan products . . . for our own sakes and for the sex life of all those fishes swimming around off California without mates.

If your suntan oil can change the sex of fish, what can do it to you?

The stuff is not only on our skin: it's in our tap water and lunches too

Spare a thought for the male hornyhead turbot. For despite its name, it is changing gender. And the sunscreens that symbolise bronzed sex appeal may be partly to blame.

Scientists have found that male hornyhead turbot and English sole, feeding near sewage outfalls on the Californian coast, are being feminised - and a chemical found in sunscreens is the likely culprit.

Meanwhile, Swiss researchers have found other suspected gender-bender chemicals from sun creams and oils building up in fish in their rivers.

Scientists at the University of California, Riverside, found that two-thirds of the male turbot and sole near a sewage outfall three miles off the surfers' paradise of Huntington Beach, near Los Angeles, were growing ovary tissue in their testes. A similar study by the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project found fish affected all along the coast. The American research is
the first to find sex changes in fish in the open ocean.

Research on the feminising of fish in British rivers by the UK Environment Agency, exclusively reported in The Independent on Sunday, concluded in 2002 that oestrogen in urine from the contraceptive pill was to blame.

But the University of California scientists found that the only culprit they could "exclusively identify" is oxybenzone, used to protect the skin from the ultraviolet component of sunlight.

Oxybenzone, which mimics oestrogen's chemical make-up, is washed off tanned bodies in the shower, passes through sewage works unchanged and settles on the seabed, where bottom-feeding fish eat it.

The scientists suspect the sunscreens are a contributory factor along with other pollutants, which they have yet to identify, such as DDT and PCBs. The new Swiss research, however, shows two other suspected gender-bender substances used in sunscreen and lip balm - octocrylene and 4-methylbenzylidene camphor - also building up alarmingly in fish.

They fear that people are being exposed to the chemicals several times over, first by putting them on their skin, and then injesting them in drinking water and the fish they eat. But the cosmetics industry denies the chemicals are dangerous, and says that"sunscreen phobia" could lead to more cancers. For, unlike other cosmetics, sunscreens unquestionably save lives. About 100,000 new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in Britain each year, of which 7,300 are particularly deadly melanomas that kill more than 1,600 people a year. Cancer Research UK fears melanoma numbers will treble over the next 30 years.

However, there have been other concerns about potential health effects. Some clear sunscreens use nanoparticles so small that they can penetrate the skin and even get into the brain.

There is also concern about a the universal use of sunscreens. By shielding ourselves from sunlight, we produce less vitamin D, which protects against as many as 16 different cancers.

Nude Snow Hiking Jan 8-11, 2006, North Cascades

Some people claim that I'm crazy and I have to agree with them. Hiking nude in a snowstorm is a crazy (and dangerous) endevour but I'd just come back from a couple of days of trying to survive winter snow camping at the 5,000 foot level near Spark Plug Lake off Highway 2 and I wasn't really ready to give up the fun just yet. While the rest of the party headed on back to civilization I overnighted in Skykomish, visited some friends and checked out the accumulating snow up at Scenic Hot Springs. The next morning I just felt like a solo hike.

Hiking in increment weather is kind of a challenge to me and always has been. I'm one of the lucky ones in that my metabolism runs pretty high after repeated excursions out into the cold . . . and there are a few tricks I use to keep myself warm and safe when I hike in conditions that have the danger of hypothermia. I strongly suggest you do not try this yourself . . . because hypothermia is a sneaky character and you probably won't recognize the symptoms until it's too late and you're in serious trouble.

The first rule is always hike with someone else so that you can watch out for each other. Well, I'd already violated that rule when I started out that late morning under skies that I knew held the promise of winter storms by afternoon. But I'm crazy and you are not.

Today's hike did not start out as a nude hike . . . I merely wanted to hike and enjoy nature . . . alone. And alone I was. After a couple of hours heading into the mountain spurs overlooking the Foss River Valley I really felt good. Euphoric to be sitting atop a ridge and staring down at totally pristine beauty and quiet, peaceful solitude. To the south and west . . . in came those dark, manacing storm clouds. Did I mention I was stupid? Did I mention that I had a grin on my face?

I stopped for a mountain lunch and hot chocolate (I always carry a thermos on cold weather hikes). It had been drizzling pretty much the entire morning. The poncho had kept me dry. But I hated the need to be wearing clothes and as I stood there on that ridge I thought . . . well, there isn't much wind out and the air temperature was hovering around 40F or so. I wanted to see how far I could hike back nude before I gave up and put protective clothing back on. It was five miles back to where I'd parked the car and I had no illusions about making it that far. I figured I'd go fifteen minutes or so before I became uncomfortably cold. I started carefully removing my clothes under the protective shelter of my poncho. Maybe it was my way of defying Mother Nature?

With several days of snow camping recently behind me, I'm already acclimized to the cold weather. My boots shield me from the snow already on the ground and I make a habit of moisturizing my skin every day before a hike (nude or otherwise). But I'm not ready for those first few hundreds of freezing cold rain drops that hit my bare skin when I stand up nude from under the cover of the poncho. I almost give up right there and if it wasn't for my obstenance I would have. After a moment or so, the shock wears off and I open up myself to the environment. Already I can felt my skin reacting to the cold air and moisture and if I don't get moving pretty soon the cold is going to sap my heat.

Once moving, I'm generating more than enough heat to keep my core warm. The feet are toasty warm; the head, where 60% of all heat loss takes place, is covered and I even have a place for my trusty floppy blue hat atop the wool cap. Hands are the first to feel the cold as my body begins to shunt arterial blood from the arms back into the body. They are also wet. On go the glacier gloves and a mantra to myself to keep exercising the fingers to prevent cold stiffness.

Rain changes to big wet snowflakes . . . then smaller dryer ones that start falling in abundance. Soon they start sticking to my skin, taking their time to melt . . . a sure sign that my shell skin temperature is dropping. Occasionally, I shake off the snow on my hat. Yet, I'm not shivering and actually feel pretty good. My nipples are pinpoint hard from the cold and there is a certain numbness to a dangling part of my anatomy, but the weather out is certainly above freezing (even with the slight wind), so there is no chance of frostbite to a very valuable part of me. I trudge on and the snowfall gets heavier. About an hour into it and I stop for some hot chocolate. I'm still not shivering but I do feel some warning signs . . . cramping of the fingers and hands even though they are protected inside the gloves . . . signs that blood is being withheld from my extremities. I didn't feel the cramps in my legs but they had been working continuously and were probably pumping out the heat I needed to keep my core temperature on up. In retrospect, the cramping should have been my give-up signal. If the arterial shunts of my arms were being used to keep me warm then my legs would be next and I needed my legs to get me to warmth and safety. But as I said . . . I'm crazy. No shivering. I kept going, still not feeling the gross effects of cold . . . definitely not feeling the cold of snow sticking to my legs and arms.

Fortunately, as I hiked lower, the snow changed back to cold rain with some sleet . . . unfortunately with a little bit of wind to it as the sky darkened (storm clouds and approaching nightfall.) I set up a brutal pace now . . . because going all the way had become a personal challenge. Occassionally, I felt a deep tremor of a shiver but shook it off. I started making mistakes . . . walking right through deep puddles instead of skirting them to keep my boots (and feet) warm and dry. Branches whipped my bare skin but I barely noticed what would normally have been a sting of a whipped-back branch.

Twilight was falling in the shadow of the ridge . . . and the temperature was dropping fast. Parts were hurting from cold . . . I mean hurting! My buttocks (used to this pace) kept cramping . . . and now the cramping was being felt in the hamstings and the calf muscles. A numbness started suffusing the upper sections of my arms. Yet I felt I must be close and I want to finish this hike nude. Did I say I was crazy?

Strange thing. When I spotted my car I practically ran to it and fumbled the keys out of my fanny pack . . . dropping them twice in stiff fingers. And then the cold panic passed the moment I unlocked the car door. Instead of getting in to safety, I calmly stood out there in the dumping sleet and removed the pack and belts and such with deliberate care . . . careful to get them properly stored before I got myself into the car.

It hit me the moment the car door shut behind me . . . the shivering as I towelled myself off and got the engine started and the blower on high. I took me several minutes to work my boot laces undone so I could pull on some clothes. It was almost a half hour later and full darkness before I felt warm enough to do much of anything. The rest of the contents of my thermos helped immensely.

I felt chills all the way back into Seattle (a two hour drive). My skin had warmed up and the numbness painfully gone from the really cold appendages of mine. One area remained cold for another hour and that was the quarter inch of fat covering my abdomen. Every other part of me was feeling the warmth . . . except this thin layer of fat across my stomach. Fat may be an excellent insulator but it's a good thing to remember that fat also stays cold longer than the richly, blood-supplied muscles and other organs. Thinking back on it, cold-retention in the fat layers of hypothermic people was one of the discussion points in my wilderness medicine classes.

Would I do it again? Damn right I would. Like any other commune with nature, I have never felt as free as when I'm hiking nude. I don't think I was ever in any real danger, but the warning signs were beginning to appear and I did violate one very important safety rule . . . two are safer than one. And I've confirmed . . . hypothermia sneaks up on you.

Banya 5 Announces Regular Monthly Co-Ed Naturist Nights

Banya 5 is an elemental experience of heat and water. You enter the heavy wooden door of the banya and immediately feel the heat of 20 tons of Cascade Granite which have been heating for over a month. You wonder if your body can tolerate the 190 degree to 200 degree heat. You sit down and slow your breath. You feel your blood circulating, drops of sweat forming on your face, your arms. You breathe. Muscles soften. Your eyes close and the heat sinks further into your core. It is hot but the wise part of you knows you can tolerate it, you want to be this hot. More sweat, more even measured breath. (From the Banya 5 website)

These events are private, and open to nudist and naturist organizations here in the Pacific Northwest. These events are governed by accepted naturist and nudist etiquette and behavior.

Please check out our website http://www.banya5.com for information about our facility.

Thank you and we'll look forward to seeing you.

(A description of the experience from James)
If you have ever been to Banya 5 you know . If not, let me give you an idea . There are no less than six bathing opportunities which include a Russian style "banya" (which I'll describe below), a most excellent steam room, a salt water dip, a cold plunge, deluge showers, and of course a hot tub. There is also a large lounging area on the top floor where one can sip Russian tea while relaxing nude.

What is a "banya"? It's similar to a sauna but with a very important difference. While a sauna has a stove that runs constantly, a banya has an oven which is used to heat the interior of the space and then shut off. The super heated walls, floor and ceiling provide a very pleasant "soaking heat" much different than the convection currents produced by a sauna. Air temperatures can be much higher and still enjoyed. If one desires, a cluster of leaves can be used to create air currents for an individual or even used on the skin for still more stimulating experiences. Following a warming session in the banya, one may opt to cool by dipping in the warmish salt water, standing under a drenching shower, or even take a quick plunge in the
cold fresh water. Or perhaps just relaxing at room temperature is for you. In any case, you'll find just the right combination of warming and cooling methods to suit you.

The facility is open to naturist sessions for six hours. This is important because you won't want the experience to be rushed. It is to be savored like a six course meal at a fine restaurant. Come as early as you can so that you can take your time, relax, enjoy chatting with friends, try something new. Leave feeling refreshed and renewed. Those of us who have been are really excited about these naturist/nudist nights. It's how banya as was meant to be
enjoyed. Don't miss this opportunity!

BTW, Keep in mind that these events are unusual in that they are wholly sponsored by the business itself and do not have outside club or individual sponsorship. The SLUGS heartily endorse the naturist/nudist nights but Banya 5 is assuming all of the risk and responsibilities. What a concept! A real business actually seeking out our patronage instead of us going begging to them! Let's encourage and support this behavior!

Merrily Enjoying the Snow at Scenic Hot Springs

Lot's of Snow up at the Springs

Snow level is way down to 1,500 to 2,000 ft with this latest series of storms . . . and a lot of heavy snow has been deposited up on the hot springs slope.

The latest attempt by George and Matt and Mike with 4-wheel drive and chained off-roaders got them no further than the first BPA Tower. The access road is a no-go! We are doing a yo-yo with the temps as well, forming a slick heavy layer that makes footing treacherous.

Because of the trail clean-up, it's unlikely anyone will get lost up there again (the route is obvious), but the snow is deep in places. Snowshoes are still overkill except in the gentle areas. I'm more inclined to carry crampons to deal with the re-frozen ice layer beneath the snow.

Snow at Scenic

National Weather Service Forecast
For the West Slopes Northern Cascades and Passes

Tonight (Thursday) ... Snow... Heavy at times. Snow accumulation around 6 inches. Snow level 3500 feet. Southwest wind in the passes 10 to 20 mph.

Friday... Snow... Heavy at times. Snow accumulation around 6 inches. Isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon. Snow level 3000 feet. Afternoon pass temperatures in the lower to mid 30s. Southwest wind in the passes 10 to 20 mph.

Friday night... Snow showers. Snow accumulation up to 6 inches. Isolated evening thunderstorms. Snow level 3000 feet. Southwest wind in the passes 10 to 20 mph.

Saturday... Snow and rain. Breezy. Snow level 3000 feet. Afternoon pass temperatures in the lower to mid 30s. Southeast wind in the passes 15 to 25 mph.

The snow level is down around 3,000 ft. Things to keep in mind:
  • The gate is at 2,400 ft. Snow is not predicted this low but if we get any the shade will keep it around. Parking and turning around can be trecherous.
  • So far the lower stretch of SR2 has been slush or bare but given snow accumulations the plows may create a large snow berm across the entrance to FS820, trapping you behind it. Carry a shovel in your vehicle.
  • The lower BPA Easement clearcut is at 2,840 ft and expected to have light snow
  • The trailhead is at 3,000 ft and you can expect the heavier snow to be near this level and up.
  • The springs are at 3,500 ft. As of right now there is 22 inches of snow at the Stevens Highway crest and they are expecting up to 36 inches by Saturday. Scenic faces north and is shaded. Expect a lot of snow up there; possibly snowshoe weather.
  • The overnight temperatures are hovering around 27 F with stiff breezes at times. That's below freezing so dress appropriately and make sure someone knows where you are going.
